Planning a product configurator for an online store

A product configurator should lead to a valid combination that can be fulfilled. Before choosing technology, describe customer choices, their dependencies and pricing. A colour list and a fully parametric design are different scopes.

When are ordinary variants enough?

If customers choose ready-made sizes and colours from a limited list, product variants may suffice. A configurator becomes useful for customer-entered dimensions, conditional options, complex pricing or visualization. Each dependency needs rules and tests.

An example rule

A panel is 60–120 cm wide; above a defined dimension, extra reinforcement is needed. Specify units, allowed increments, rounding and invalid-value messages. This is a planning model, not a claim about an existing product or project.

What should an order record?

  • Chosen parameters with unambiguous names.
  • Calculated price and pricing rule version.
  • Materials or attachments needed for production.
  • Whether design approval is required.

The summary must also be readable for the employee fulfilling the order. A preview image may not be enough to reconstruct parameters.

Tests before launch

Check boundary values, option changes after adding to the basket and invalid configurations. Verify price and description consistency on the product page, in the basket and in the order. Validate rules on the server too, rather than only hiding browser options.

What affects cost?

Dependencies, visualization and fulfilment integration matter more than option counts. Start with a rule table and several valid and invalid examples. Then compare available extensions with custom development.

Must the configurator show a final price?

No. It can prepare a quotation enquiry. It must clearly state whether the result is a purchase price, estimate or configuration description.

Send a sample product and configuration rules for a feasibility review.
