Multilingual website SEO: URLs and hreflang
Multilingual SEO needs content and technical setup to work together. Visitors should reach the correct language offer, while search engines receive clear URLs and relationships between corresponding pages.
Language and market are different decisions
German content can target several countries. Decide whether offers, contact and service conditions differ. Do not create regional versions without information that genuinely justifies the distinction.
A map of equivalents
List the Polish service, its translation and other language URLs. Check that switching language leads to the equivalent rather than always to the homepage. Where no translation exists, define clear behaviour instead of an empty URL.
Canonical and hreflang
Canonical identifies a content item’s preferred URL; hreflang describes language or regional variants. They are not interchangeable. Google’s documentation requires valid codes and reciprocal relationships. Versions should also reference themselves.
Technical checklist
- Target URLs work without unnecessary redirects.
- Pages intended for search are not marked noindex.
- Canonicals match the intended version.
- Language relationships connect corresponding content.
- The sitemap and internal links include published URLs.
Translating a keyword does not replace intent research
Foreign customers may use different product names and compare other specifications. Review local vocabulary, applications and questions. Someone who knows both product and language should approve technical content; automatic translation can change a property’s meaning.
Checks after launch
Monitor availability, canonical selection and Search Console queries. Distinguish indexing problems from limited demand or an unsuitable offer. Correct tags do not guarantee rankings in a new market.
Is a separate domain necessary?
Not always. Domains, subdomains and directories have different organizational consequences. Consistency and maintaining the chosen structure during growth matter.
